Based on the daily UK Met Office data at the 25 pressure levels ranging from 1000 to 0.316 hPa, the correlation between the characteristics of the annual cycle in the lower and middle atmosphere with the solar activity is studied. The annual cycle is characterised by the amplitudes and months of maxima of the annual and semiannual harmonics of zonal and meridional wind, temperature, and geopotential height. These amplitudes and phases are calculated for each year of the period 1992-2013, which covers two solar cycles. In turn, the solar activity is characterised by the monthly mean Wolf numbers. To avoid spurious correlations, the FDR (false detection rate) method is used. We found that the amplitudes of the annual and (especially) semi-annual harmonics of zonal wind in the equatorial upper stratosphere are negatively correlated with the Wolf numbers. For meridional wind, the respective correlations are not significant. |
