The purpose of this study is to investigate the number of Koreans studying in Kazan's “Kazan Teacher's Foreign Seminary” from the late 18th to early 19th centuries according to ancient documents from the National Archives of Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan and to organize historical data from the beginning and development of Korean studies.
The research results are as follows.
First, from the end of the 19th century, traces of Koreans in the Kazan region could only be found in the Kazan Teacher's Foreign Seminary.
Second, the surveyed documents are as follows: Korean petitions for admission, Tuition payment and receipt documents, dormitory life, curriculum for each grade, graduation exam subjects, and original school graduation certificates.
Third, the name of nineteen Korean students by year were grasped. Compared to the results of previous studies, more accurate number of people and names were proved.
Fourth, evidence was found that nine Korean students participated as interpreters and soldiers in the Russo-Japanese War. |
