Аннотация The paper studies the issues of compensation for environmental damages from the standpoint of economic mechanisms. We raise the questions of the problem of external effects internalization. We have studied the issues of the level of environmental pollution in Russia during the economic crisis. We bring results of the data analysis on the Russian population morbidity rate, on the cases of environmental pollution of extreme nature, on the structure of environmental costs. The article analyzes the relationship between the values of environmental protection investment and the level of GDP. The obtained regression equation has led us to the conclusion that it is necessary to improve the economic mechanism of compensation for environmental damages, since the existing model does not achieve the required efficiency. The hypotheses presented by the authors are partially confirmed.
