Ordered Fe65Al35–xBx (x = 5, 10 at%) alloys were produced by mechanical alloying followed by annealing. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectra confirm formation of an ordered bcc phase. The structure and magnetism of Fe65Al30B5 (400 ?C, 32 h) were examined by magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy over 5–630 K and in applied fields up to 50 kOe. The analysis of the Mössbauer data was supported by density functional theory calculations. Compared with the binary Fe65Al35 alloy, the B-containing sample exhibits markedly higher saturation magnetization, Fe magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and average 57Fe hyperfine field. The ternary alloy is heterogeneous: its ferromagnetic fraction consists of ∼50 % D03-ordered and ∼20 % A2-disordered domains within the cubic lattice. The remaining ≤ 30 % is non-ferromagnetic and is attributed to an incommensurate spin structure (spin spiral or spin-density wave) in a lattice isomorphic to bcc Fe. This larger ferromagnetic volume fraction accounts for the stronger magnetic properties of Fe65Al30B5 relative to Fe65Al35. |
