According to the established historical consensus, the Sufi tradition in the Volga region traces its origins to the 12th-century Turkic Sheikh Ahmed Yasawi, who resided in Bukhara. The first Tatar sheikhs, known as ishans, received ijaza (spiritual authorization) through ustadhs—spiritual mentors of the Yasawiyya order founded by Yasawi. The Naqshbandiyya tariqa also played a pivotal role in the spiritual life of the Kazan Khanate, establishing itself as one of the preeminent Sufi schools in the region. Within the Kazan Khanate, Naqshbandiyya traditions coexisted with the Yasawiyya order, and many scholars simultaneously adhered to both spiritual lineages. |
