The problems of pre-existing phenomena are very actual in modern science. Pre-existing (or precedent) visual images are visual images of cultural space stored in the memories of those belonging to a certain socio-cultural community. In linguistics the phenomenon of precedence is usually treated as an element of linguistic consciousness, i.e. as images of consciousness which are generated and objectified with the help of language means. The semiotic approach to this phenomenon suggests that precedence is a mental reflection (constructive and creative, rather than passive) of a piece of information about the cultural space which is significant for this community. Precedence is the community?s collective cultural memory, it is a part of their general worldview, not merely of their linguistic world image.
