This paper describes methods for identifying annual laminations in Permian clays. Laminations were studied by analyzing scans of polished samples of clay. Spectral analysis of couplets showed harmonic elements with periods that are multiples of 11, indicating the seasonal nature of lamination and providing an opportunity for determining the sedimentation rate. The sedimentation rate is estimated at 0.15 mm per year, and differs significantly from estimates obtained earlier. Perhaps not all couplets should be considered annual. The question of which layers should be considered as annual and which should not, remains open, and requires further study. |
