Аннотация The article studies the novel of the modern Austrian writer Elizabeth Reichart (born in 1953) February Shadows(Februarschatten, 1984), devoted to the events of 1945thatbecame known in history under the title “MühlviertelHare Hunt”, from the standpoint of cognitive poetics, which allows identifying the means of creating the artistic world and the author's individual style. The question is raised about the relationship between the literary category “motive” and linguo-cognitive formations –concepts that are most closely related to the motive of silence. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that it was written in line with cognitive poetics; this approach allows identifying the specifics of the functioning of the motive of silence in the literary text, revealing the identity of the author's attitude and individual style. The authors of the article proceed from the fact that the motive of silence is presented in the novel under study by various concepts. Silence as acommunicative-behavioural strategy of the characters is correlated with such concepts as “loneliness”, “guilt”, “prohibition”, “oblivion”, “protest”, etc., ontological silence and/or silence is the essence of the Austrian mentality of the second half of the twentieth century. The main means of verbal explication of these concepts that contribute to the implementation of the motive of silence in the novel by Reichart have been revealed
