Objective: To investigate the content of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe) in serum and saliva in patients with moderate to severe COPD during the exacerbation.
The levels of Ca, Mg, Fe in saliva and serum were studied in 97 patients with COPDII and COPDIII during exacerbation and 28 healthy non-smokers volunteers. The activity BSB was determined by the value of the distribution coefficient (CR).
The serum Ca, Mg and Fe levels in the examined patients with COPD did not differ from the control group. A decrease in the concentration of salivary Mg was found in patients with COPDII (2.2 times) and COPDIII (2.7 times) compared with control (0.63?0.03 mmol/l, p <0.05). The concentration of Fe in saliva increased significantly in COPDII (2 times) and COPDIII (1.6 times) compared with control (5.94?0.21 μmol/l). The content of salivary and circulating Ca did not differ from the control. A positive correlation was established between the content of salivary Mg and FEV1 with COPDII (r=0.39, p<0.05) and COPDIII (r=0.46, p<0.05). In addition, a positive correlation was revealed between the content of circulating Mg and FEV1 in patients with COPDIII (r=0.42, p <0.05). A negative association between the concentration of Fe in saliva and FEV1 in COPDII (r=–0.46, p<0.05) was found. A positive correlation was established between the Fe content in the blood and FEV1 in patients with COPDIII (r=0.39, p<0.05). CR for Mg increased progressively with the severity of the disease. A decrease in CR for Fe in COPDII by 49.8% and by 36.9% in patients with COPDIII was recorded.
The changes in the BSB activity can be one of the links in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation and bronchial obstruction. |
