The paper makes an insight into the issue of enhancing research competences of Master degree students
majoring in Foreign Language Education. The problem is viewed as a case study of teaching postgraduate
students at Higher School of Foreign languages and Translation Studies, Kazan Federal University, Russian
Federation.
The research data were accumulated via traditional research methods of literature review, observation,
product analysis and interview with will-be Masters and their research supervisors, i.e. professors of English
and Teaching Methods at the Department of European Languages and Cultures of KFU.
Taking into consideration that the Master's degree is a two-fold course, both academic and research, the
authors view a Master's thesis as a revelation of the research potential of the post graduate student, their
abilities in organizing and conducting independent study, using modern methods and approaches in solving
problems in the field under consideration, identifying the results, their argumentation and developing sound
recommendations and proposals on the issue.
Thus the authors suggest a Master's thesis to be evaluated according to the following criteria: the quality of
theoretical study of the problem; the quality and compliance of the research methodology with the problem;
completeness, consistency and variety of approaches to solving the problem under consideration; the
effectiveness of solving a specific theoretical and (or) practically applied problem that is important for a
particular branch of science. The authors concise that along with coherence and cohesion of the thesis' text,
the most revealing criteria of the advanced research competence is the ability to apply the research
terminology. The will-be Masters in Foreign Language Education are taught to correctly formulate the
reasons for the choice of the topic, its relevance, state the aim and objectives, the object/subject of the
research, research tools, research novelty, theoretical and practical value, all presented in the Thesis
Introduction, which is scrutinized and exemplified in the paper. The criteria is successfully implemented at
the Higher School of FLTS.
The conclusions made by the authors are also backed by careful interpretation of Master degree students'
conference reports, research papers and theses collected and examined through many years of expert work
in the field. The paper also presents recommendations for the improvement of quality of the Foreign
Language Education thesis focusing on the Introduction. The materials presented in the paper may be used
to improve the process of post-graduate research work in the university and worldwide |
