Based on the daily UK Met Office data at the 25 pressure levels ranging from 1000 to 0.316 hPa, the linear interannual trends of planetary wave activity (PWA) in the lower and middle atmosphere during 1992-2014 are studied. This wave activity is determined via the amplitudes of zonal harmonics with zonal wave number 1 or 2 for a suit of atmospheric variables (horizontal wind, temperature, geopotential height). Different types of averaging allow us to distinguish between the planetary waves arising due to intramonth, intraannual, and interannual variabilities. We found that, irrespective of such an averaging and for all variables, three principal regions of planetary activity may be found. The most marked on is located in the winter hemisphere. It covers the whole stratosphere depth, exhibits prominent wave activity at all latitudes with a maximum around the subtropical stratopause. |
