Abstract
This article examines the problems of language situation in India. The paper focuses on the stages of penetration of English into the territory of the state and its functional development taking into consideration the evolution of the social status of English by means of education and other social instruments. The authors explore the views of linguists on the role of English in India in the historical perspective. In terms of language development education is traditionally considered one of the most powerful tools thus making it extremely important to analyze the historic and current trends in this interaction. The purpose of this study is to identify the functional level of English language in one of the most multinational states in the world. The goal is achieved through the analysis of qualitative and quantitative parameters of the language situation in India.
