this study examines the complexity of Russian and English political documents, more specifically the
texts of the United Nations.
The purpose of the study is to make an attempt to determine the complexity of Russian and English UN texts using two parameters – lexical density and lexical diversity (TTR). Materials and methods include the texts of the
United Nations by utilizing Textinspector and Rulingva to compute them. We created a corpus of approximately
40,000 words by limiting the samples to 1,000 words in each of 40 texts, i.e., 20 texts in Russian and 20 texts in
English. The findings showed that lexical density of Russian UN texts varied between 67 and 71, which implies
that Russian UN texts are higher than English UN texts in terms of lexical density; that is, lexical density of English UN texts varied between 38.97% and 45.09%, which indicates that the texts are less informative and therefore
may impact complexity. As a result, lexical density of English UN texts is categorised less dense in contrast to
Russian UN texts which is dense. Lexical diversity (TTR) of Russian UN texts varied between 0.6 and 0.62 and
English UN texts varied between 0.36 and 0.43, which indicates higher degrees of variation. In conclusion, we have
found that there is a slight difference between Russian and English UN texts in terms of lexical diversity (TTR);
that is, the texts contain a number of repetitions which may facilitate comprehension. Besides, both parameters
could serve as predictors when investigating the complexity of Russian and English UN texts. |
