Annotation |
The Soviet Union relied very heavily on its education system as a tool for economic and social development. Following the breakup of the Union, decisions were made in each of the fifteen nations about how to develop their own education system. This chapter examines how education reforms have been central to the transformation processes in every country, albeit with different approaches to 'nation-building' and the development of the respective national identities. The reformulated purposes of schooling and the approaches towards curriculum, pedagogy and assessment are discussed. The development of the USSR education system and its socialist foundation are reviewed. The significance of teacher education within national education systems is discussed. |
