Annotation The image of the past in the consciousness of the population is a social construct that is constituted by a multitude of narratives derived from a variety of sources. Nevertheless, it is school education that exerts the most significant influence on the population's perceptions of the past. Within the context of the school history curriculum, a particular emphasis is placed on introducing schoolchildren to physical locations that serve as sites of memory. The metaphor of 'places of memory' is an invaluable analytical tool for the study of social memory. It is now employed not only to denote a physical monument that preserves the memory of the past, but also to examine tangible and intangible cultural products (e.g. books, plays, regular events, etc.). In this text, the term 'place of memory' is used in this sense.
